"Bad Command" Error

"Bad command or file name" is a common error message in MS-DOS® and some other operating systems which is normally caused by misspelling or error when typing a command to be used is not a valid command for your version of MS-DOS or Windows. This error means that there was no such command and there was no such file. There might be also a problem with the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The PATH statement specifies which directories the system should automatically search for programs running.

  • Check the command you are running for spelling errors.
  • Ensure the command you are trying to run is in the directory you are in.
  • Edit the PATH command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, if you are trying to run a command in another directory that should be accessible from anywhere.

1. Locate which line is mistyped in the autoexec.bat or config.sys that is causing the issue.

2. In Windows Startup menu, choose step-by-step confirmation.

3. The computer will prompt you to select "Yes or No" to each command stored on your computer.

4. Select "Yes" to each of these commands, until you find the error. Once you locate the error, write down the line you said Yes to.

5. Edit autoexec.bat/config.sys, once you get back to Windows. Find the file and try to correct the line.

There are different type of errors the user may encounter while working on the system such as bad command, missing command interpreter, divide overflow, drive not ready error, file creation error, invalid directory, insufficient disk space and many more.
